My 10 Days in Iceland: Adventures, Waterfalls, and Lava Tunnels
Iceland had been on my bucket list for years, and I finally got the chance to experience its rugged beauty on a 10-day road trip. This small yet incredible island exceeded all my expectations with its dramatic landscapes, breathtaking waterfalls, and unique volcanic terrain. Here’s how my journey unfolded, from the capital city of Reykjavik to the far reaches of Iceland’s famous Ring Road.
Day 1-3: Exploring Reykjavik and the Icelandic Food Scene
I kicked off my adventure in Reykjavik, Iceland’s vibrant capital. The city is the perfect introduction to the country, blending modern culture with deep history. During my first three days, I joined a local food tour that introduced me to traditional Icelandic dishes—delicious cinnamon buns, hearty lamb stew, and, of course, the famous Icelandic lamb hot dog.
When I wasn’t eating, I was out exploring. HallgrĂmskirkja Church, with its impressive tower, was a highlight, and I couldn’t resist checking out some of Reykjavik’s unique glass houses. If you’re a fan of city life with a twist, Reykjavik’s blend of history, art, and food is a great way to begin your Icelandic adventure.
Day 4: Road Trip to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula
On the fourth day, I picked up my rental car and set off to explore the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. This area is packed with natural wonders, and my first stop was Hraunfossar and Barnafoss—two waterfalls that flow through lava fields, creating an otherworldly landscape. The contrast between the blue water and black lava was mesmerizing.
I also ventured to Budahraun Lava Field, Djupalonssandur Beach, and Kirkjufellsfoss, one of the most photographed mountains in Iceland. With every stop, I found myself in awe of Iceland’s raw beauty, and I quickly realized that no photo could capture the feeling of standing in these incredible places.
Day 5: Descending into a Lava Tunnel
If I had to choose a single highlight from the trip, it would be day five’s lava tunnel adventure. I visited RaufarhĂ³lshellir, a massive lava tunnel located just outside Reykjavik. Descending into the tunnel, I was greeted by the sight of twisted rock formations and vibrant mineral colors lining the walls. The 40-minute tour felt like stepping into Iceland’s volcanic past—an experience I won’t forget anytime soon.
Day 6: Relaxing at Sky Lagoon
After all that adventure, I was ready for some relaxation, and Sky Lagoon provided exactly that. Soaking in the warm geothermal waters, surrounded by stunning ocean views, I felt completely at peace. There’s even a floating pool bar, where I grabbed a drink and took in the beauty of Iceland’s natural landscape. It was the perfect way to recharge for the days ahead.
Day 7-10: Waterfalls, Glaciers, and the Ring Road
The final leg of my journey took me around Iceland’s famous Ring Road. I visited some of the most incredible waterfalls I’ve ever seen—Gullfoss, Seljalandsfoss, and SkĂ³gafoss. Each one offered a different experience, but all were equally awe-inspiring. I made sure to walk behind the curtain of water at Seljalandsfoss, which felt like being inside a secret world.
Driving along the Ring Road also gave me the chance to explore glaciers, national parks, and even an ice cave. Every twist and turn revealed something new and stunning. And after long days of exploring, I stopped at a few natural hot springs to relax under the open sky.
Final Thoughts
Looking back, my 10 days in Iceland were packed with adventure, discovery, and moments of pure awe. From the vibrant city of Reykjavik to the serene landscapes along the Ring Road, Iceland captured my heart. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, exploring lava tunnels, or relaxing in geothermal spas, Iceland offers something unforgettable at every turn.
If you’re thinking about visiting Iceland, I highly recommend adding it to your bucket list. There’s no better way to experience the magic of this country than hitting the road and letting its beauty unfold before you. I know I’ll be back—there’s still so much more to see!
